Home Theater with Wireless Rear Speakers
For the purposes of this website, I will assume that you are wanting to set up a surround sound system and either CANNOT or SIMPLY PREFER NOT TO run two long speaker wires from the front to the back of your room to connect a pair of surround speakers. Perhaps you DO NOT have AC power outlets available where you might want to place rear surround speakers and hate the idea of running extension cords.
I will also assume that you DO NOT MIND conventional hard-wiring for the front left, center channel, and front right speaker. Lastly, a powered subwoofer to provide the low frequency bass must be plugged into a nearby AC power outlet, even if it is so-called “wireless”.

The most-versatile affordable surround sound receiver currently on the market for setting up a home theater audio system with wireless rear surround speakers is the Sony STR-AN1000 7.2-channel receiver. Sony’s high-end ES (Elevated Standard) receivers are also wireless rear speaker ready. The three different ways these Sony receivers do wireless rear speakers are:
- It can connect to a pair of Sony SA-RS5 wireless rear speakers with BUILT-IN RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES so NO POWER CORDS ARE REQUIRED except for recharging, which can be done anywhere you have access to AC power outlets. They have up to a 10-hour battery life and a 4-hour charge time, and must be manually powered on and off.
- It can connect to a pair of Sony SA-RS8 wireless rear speakers which need to be plugged into nearby AC power outlets.
- It can be connected to a third-party wireless rear speaker kit which allows you to use rear speakers of your choice. The wireless transmitter is connected to rear speaker outputs on back of the receiver and must also be plugged into an AC outlet. The wireless receiver with a built-in two-channel amplifier must also be plugged into a power outlet near where you want to place your rear surround speakers, and you need speaker wire run between the wireless receiver and each rear speaker.
Hard-Wired Left, Center, Right, (Wireless?) Sub Bundles to Complete the Home Theater System
Below are some recommended speaker bundles that could be added to the Sony STR-AN1000 receiver + SA-RS5 speakers bundle pictured above which include front left, center channel, and front right speakers as well as a powered subwoofer to provide the deep bass. You should assume that you will need to separately supply or buy speaker wire to connect the front three speakers to the receiver, plus a subwoofer cable to connect the sub to the receiver, unless noted otherwise.
